Olean must be a safe, secure place for families, businesses, and individuals. As mayor, Amy Sherburne will:
Support law enforcement and first responders through funding, technology, and grant-seeking initiatives.
Improve emergency response infrastructure, including a modernized firehouse equipped with solar energy.
Address the inefficiencies of scattered DPW operations by centralizing equipment and storage to reduce long-term costs and maintain roads.
- Protect Olean’s water infrastructure by seeking sustainable manufacturing partnerships and leveraging our abundant water resources for revenue and job creation.
Olean’s Public Safety & City Services
Olean must be a safe place for families, businesses, and individuals. As mayor, I will address crime and enforce housing regulations to prevent absentee landlords from neglecting their properties.
As mayor, I will support law enforcement while promoting community-based solutions to enhance neighborhood safety, and address social issues. I will advocate for our police by researching the latest technology and seek grants that will effectively save our department from the daunting task of performing their duties with less resources and safety equipment.
As mayor, I will support our first responders and EMSs with a smart plan for our future that will not compromise our public safety. I firmly believe a paid fire department not only ensures the fastest response in an emergency, we have a responsibility to protect area manufacturers, schools, hospital and historic buildings. It’s also beneficial to property owners’ insurance premiums. I see our future with an improved fire house that will meet the current demands of our fire department. I propose we lead this project with the intent of enhancing our energy independence by installing solar panels on the roof of this building as well any municipal building owned by the city.
In additon to our Police and Fire Department, we must address the scattered layout of our Department of Public Works. The salt storage building is crumbling along with the current condition of the property located adjacent to Delaware Park Centre. We need to centralize our DPW and tackle the issue of inefficiency with several properties housing equipment. With the savings we can channel the funds needed to maintain our roads. I propose we explore all city properties suitable for the fleet and storage of salt. This will not happen overnight, but a successful mayor recognizes the needs of the city, structures a plan and implements the solution for the sustainability of our future. I will work with county and state officials in achieving the best financial outcome for our taxpayers using grants and other municipal assistance for projects such as these.
Our water filtration plant is vital to our future success. I will explore revenue-generating ideas such as a third-party manufacturing partner with PepsiCo or companies alike where our abundance of sustainable water is highly desired. PepsiCo, once a private partner manufacturer in Olean’s not-too-distant past, follows the principles of WICER, Water In Circular Economy and Resilience. Because of the Allegheny River watershed, our water security gives Olean the leverage to negotiate a partnership, increase the revenue, and address our aging water distribution lines now and in the future.
